16 hands and growing. He fractured both front fetlocks as a foal/weanling and was never sent to the track. He has not been started under saddle. He is now healed from his injuries and is sound.
This boy is going to be huge. At just 18 months of age, he is already 16 hands and larger than our other yearlings. He is VERY sweet, a gentle giant and is as sensible as a yearling can be. He walks nicely on a lead rope, loves being groomed, stands well for the farrier’s trims, and is fairly comfortable with fly spray. He is working on gaining confidence with the hose and baths. He was well behaved for the vet and stood nicely for his ad page pictures. Martello is very easy going regarding changes of environment and routine – he takes everything in stride and focuses on his handler when in doubt.
Once Martello has developed and is ready to start under saddle, he should be suitable for any flat discipline. He will need an experienced rider/handler that has experience with starting youngsters.
Martello does well in a stall for part of the day and enjoys nightly turnout with another young gelding. He would also be happy with 24/7 turnout with adequate shelter. He is an easy keeper who easily maintains weight on ration balance, hay and grass.
He will make a fun horse to mold into what you want without having to tend with racetrack mentality. Very sweet boy to have around the barn.
We introduced him to tack and he did well. He was well behaved when weight was on his back and seems intelligent and willing to do a job. He is gentle for tacking up.
