24 Gulf (Abe)

Yearling thoroughbred gelding bred in KY
Upstart (Flatter) out of Gulf by Blame

Growing. Currently 16 hands. He was not suitable for racing due to right knee arthritis and bone spurs. He will be suitable for trail riding and flat work once mature.

“Abe” is a sensitive and gentle rising two year old who loves attention and quiet play. He walks nicely on a lead rope, loves to be groomed, and is very polite during stall cleaning and feed times. Abe has a slightly higher energy level and can become nervous in new situations, but he is very trusting of his handler and will listen even in tense moments.

Abie is currently practicing standing for the farrier (does well but will lean or put his foot down a few times in a session), tying, and walking out from the barn without a friend. He is still nervous when his blanket is placed upon him but is polite about having the straps fastened. This spring and summer he will need to practice getting flay spray and baths. He already does well walking over poles and other small obstacles. Abie is very good at responding to quiet requests to move back and to the side. He will be lots of fun to work with on groundwork and in-hand dressage. Abie responds best to a very light touch in training.

Abe gets along with a range of personalities. He currently turns out with one equally mature yearling, but also does fine with our younger, smaller boys – he is a follower who just wants friendly company. He would do well with youngsters his own age, or with kind older horses.

Abie has an overbite and drops some grain when he eats. Feeding him on a clean rubber mat allows him to clean up the grain that falls on the floor. Or, if his grain is soaked he does not drop it. He holds weight easily. Abie’s prominent upper lip is very strong and sensitive and he loves to groom and massage his equine and human friends.

Abie is available now for the right adopter. He will need a patient, experienced and knowledgeable adopter that has prior experience training yearlings.

“Abe” was castrated in late May 2024. He is large for a yearling and may grow to be 16.3- 17 hands over the next few years.
